Are You Thinking That Manny Pacquiao is the Best?

Are You Thinking That Manny Pacquiao is the Best?

His merchandise and boxing memorabilia is extremely popular, not only in his native Philippines but throughout the rest of the world as well. But is he the best out there right now?

Generally Manny Pacquiao is acknowledged as the number 1 pound for pound fighter in the sport of boxing. This is a lofty status, and Pacquiao has earned his placement there after moving all the way up to welterweight and besting the likes of Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya and Miguel Cotto along the way. During his stay at the lighter weight classes he of course had epic encounters with and beat Juan Manuel Marquez, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera as well.

These are some very gaudy accomplishments, and Pacquiao is also an extremely exciting fighter. That’s another reason why his boxing memorabilia and sports memorabilia is so popular today. He doesn’t go into a fight to focus on defense or to try to scrape by with a close decision win. He goes into a fight to knock the other guy out and win emphatically, and fans love his style and his personality.

Even though Pacquiao is the number 1 pound for pound fighter however, there is at least one other fighter who has claims to the throne. That man is the undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr., and he was actually the pound for pound best until he temporarily retired from the sport. In retirement he ceded the spot to Pacquiao, and since coming back from retirement he has only fought once so far.

However, he has a long and storied career in the sport, spanning many different weight classes. He too has beaten Hatton and De La Hoya, and he beat them both before Pacquiao did. He has also beaten fighters like Jose Luis Castillo, Diego Corrales, Genaro Hernandez and Zab Judah.

The two were supposed to meet in an epic encounter in March of 2010 however the negotiations got ruined. The fight would have settled the score for who the real best fighter in the world is. It also would have created a whirlwind of interest in boxing memorabilia for both fighters and sports memorabilia from the entire fight and event. However, no agreement could finally be reached and for now the two men will move on in different directions.

This has left the boxing world without a clear answer to the question of who is the best. Yes, Pacquiao is the pound for pound king right now and his boxing memorabilia is rightfully extremely popular and valuable. However, undefeated Floyd Mayweather certainly can claim he is the best as well.
